Addiction Therapies

Addressing mental health is the cornerstone of addiction treatment. When an individual struggles with drug and alcohol abuse, it isn’t easy to function and live a healthy lifestyle.

Drug and alcohol addiction is tackled by focusing on substance abuse and any underlying mental health challenges contributing to addiction. When an individual has a substance abuse disorder and a mental illness, it is referred to as a co-occurring disorder. The two conditions may vary in severity and even change levels of severity over time.

Addiction therapy addresses co-occurring disorders in a constructive, proactive manner. While each individual requires a customized addiction treatment plan to meet their specific needs, therapy is essential. In fact, following detox and treatment, counseling is vital to address mental health triggers that may lead to relapse. There are various addiction therapy options, depending upon the specific addiction the person is struggling with. Finding the right combination of therapy treatment is imperative to lay the foundation for a successful recovery.

Types of Addiction Therapy

There are a variety of therapies to address mental health and addiction issues at the same time. Some therapy will work for some people and not others, and some will find that a particular combination of therapies works best. The key is to realize that addiction therapy is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Crafting a customized treatment is imperative.

Addiction treatment is typically a mix of both group and individual therapy sessions that center on teaching skills to help maintain sobriety. This means addressing potential triggers and how to handle them to avoid a relapse. In addition, clients may engage in family therapy, couples therapy, and individual therapy.

Drug and alcohol rehab most often uses behavioral therapy to treat most clients. This type of treatment was developed in the 1960s and focuses on cognitive, emotional, and behavioral issues. A licensed medical professional will help identify and address their thinking patterns, including distortions, automatic thoughts, and underlying beliefs.

The most common types of behavioral therapy include:

  • 12-Step Program: looked at as the gold standard for recovery for nearly all addictions, 12-step facilitation uses the Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous model to promote continued sobriety.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): focuses on learning how to recognize and change thoughts, moods, and even situations that can trigger cravings for drugs. Often paired with other techniques, CBT is extremely useful in developing coping skills that last well beyond recovery treatment.
  • Contingency Management Therapy (CM): this rewards-based therapy type serves as a motivator to reinforce good behaviors.
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): focused on self-acceptance, this type of therapy aims to teach individuals to make meaningful changes in their lives that help them overcome past behaviors.
  • Exposure Therapy: this type of therapy repeatedly exposes a person to stimuli associated with substance use to ease distress linked to a triggering event.
  • Habit Reversal Training: this type of therapy seeks to break the cycle of addictive behaviors, often by replacing substance abuse with a healthier habit
  • Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT): helps to train a person to manage their emotional, behavioral, or cognitive biases based on the concept that rational thinking comes internally, not from outside events.
  • Systematic Desensitization: using gradual exposure to a person’s addiction, this type of therapy aims to desensitize a person to whatever substance they were once dependent on.

All of the above behavioral therapies require a licensed medical professional to help guide the client through their treatment. Success typically lies in combining the above drug and alcohol recovery therapies, along with additional methods like experimental therapies, mindfulness therapies, and alternative/holistic therapies.

Some additional therapies and counseling commonly offered to treat drug and alcohol addiction include:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Art Therapy
  • Cognitive Remediation Therapy
  • Dance Therapy
  • Electroconvulsive Therapy
  • Equine Therapy
  • Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Nidotherapy
  • Nutrition Counseling
  • Psychodynamic Therapy
  • Recreational Therapy
  • Schema Therapy
  • Yoga Therapy

Counseling and therapy play an enormous role in a person’s journey to sobriety. Often combined with medications, seeking professional help is crucial to tackling recovery head-on.
