While these are the three main phases of addiction recovery, there are many ways to go about these treatment options. In addition to inpatient rehab, out-patient rehab, and sober living aftercare, there are also options like Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs PHP).
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
This type of drug and alcohol addiction treatment is a part-time program where someone attends about 10-15 hours per week. The program’s length can be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months and is structured to be flexible to accommodate different schedules. For instance, some IOPs are offered on the weekends or evenings to allow participants to stick to their work schedules, school, or family obligations.
IOP’s are planned to allow for some autonomy, and they offer therapy, educational activities, and psychiatric and medical care. Clients who participate in IOP may live at home and receive treatment from addiction professionals at their scheduled time. This treatment option is great for those who need a degree of independence and flexibility.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
This drug and alcohol addiction treatment program is the middle ground between in- and out-patient treatment. Unlike IOP, PHP is a full-time program that typically requires participants to be there for 6-8 hours per day, five days per week. One of PHP’s most significant benefits is access to both mental health professionals and acute medical services in a shortened window of time. PHP is particularly well-suited for those suffering from co-occurring disorders.
Some of the best candidates for PHP are patients who have already gone through medical detox and inpatient rehab. Following those two programs, PHP serves to keep patients engaged in therapy and on track in their sobriety. It works exceptionally well with patients looking to maintain their lives while still getting full-time recovery care benefits.
